vMix

Planned

Planned: cue a flight from the vMix production, and hold a camera that is live on program.

A flight is an authored camera move, with a planned route, framing and pace from departure through landing. vMix runs the program in rooms this software is built for, so the camerawork should answer the same cues the production already uses and should know which camera is on air. This is planned work and it is not built yet. What it will do: let a vMix shortcut cue a prepared flight, and let the software hold a camera still for as long as vMix has it on program, so nothing moves under the cut. Your program video keeps its own path either way — the software moves the cameras and leaves the video chain alone.

How it connects

Planned: vMix and the software would exchange cues and on-air status across your production network. The pictures would keep going straight from the cameras to vMix.

What it does

  • When this path is built, a vMix shortcut the production already uses can cue a prepared flight, so the camerawork answers the same running order as the rest of the show.
  • When this path is built, a camera that vMix has on program holds still, and a cue for that camera waits until the cut has moved on.
  • When this path is built, cameras that vMix is not showing can be sent ahead, so the next cut lands on a shot that is already composed.

What it does not do

  • It does not run today. This is planned work, and no vMix shortcut cues a flight in a shipping release yet.
  • It will not carry video. The cameras keep sending their pictures straight to vMix, and the software never sits between a camera and the program.
  • It will not take the switcher away from the person running it. vMix keeps deciding what goes to air; the software decides how a camera moves.

Setting it up

01

Check your cameras first

Run the setup check on the cameras vMix already switches. The software measures each one and tells you plainly whether it can fly it, before anything else is planned.

02

Compose the moves your show uses

Draw the shots and the flights your production needs today, and run them from the software on a cue. That part of the workflow works now, with vMix untouched.

03

Name the shortcuts you would link

Tell us which vMix shortcuts and inputs your show leans on. When the path is built, those names are what a cue would be tied to.

Questions

Can vMix cue a camera move today?

No. The vMix path is planned and it does not run today. Today your production team decides when a camera moves, and the software moves it when asked, from the controller or the computer running it.

Will a camera move while vMix has it on air?

That is exactly what the planned path is for. When it is built, a camera on program holds still and its cue waits for the cut.

Does the software need to receive our vMix video?

No. It never joins the video path. Your cameras send their pictures to vMix as they do now, and the software reaches the cameras over the control network to move them.

Is there a switcher path that runs today?

Yes. Tally awareness runs today with a Blackmagic ATEM: a camera on program holds still, and a cue for it waits for the cut. vMix, OBS, TriCaster, Ross and NDI tally are planned.
