Switchers and tally

NDI tally

Planned

Planned: tally awareness, so the camera on program does not move under the cut.

Tally is the one bit of data that makes prepared camerawork trustworthy in a room where somebody else is cutting: it says which camera the room is watching right now. This is planned work and it is not built yet. What it will do: take that status where NDI already carries it, hold a camera for as long as it is live, and release the cue the moment the camera is clear. Until it is built, the production team decides when a camera moves, and the software moves it when asked.

How it connects

Planned: the software would read tally status where NDI already publishes it on your network. It would send no video of its own into that network.

What it does

  • When this path is built, the software takes on-air status where NDI already carries it on your network, and knows which camera the room is watching.
  • When this path is built, a camera that is live holds still for as long as it stays on program.
  • When this path is built, a cue for a live camera waits and is released the moment the camera is clear, so the move still happens.
  • When this path is built, cameras that are clear of the cut can prepare for the next moment, so the cut lands on a composed shot.

What it does not do

  • It does not run today. This is planned work, and no NDI tally reaches the camerawork in a shipping release yet.
  • It will not send video into your NDI network. The software would read status and publish no pictures of its own.
  • It will not decide what goes to air. Whatever is switching your NDI sources keeps that job; the software respects its answer.

Setting it up

01

Check your cameras first

Run the setup check on the cameras your NDI production uses. The software measures each one and says plainly whether it can fly it.

02

Compose and cue camerawork now

Draw the shots and the flights your show needs, and cue them from the software. A flight is an authored camera move, with a planned route, framing and pace from departure through landing.

03

Tell us what switches your NDI sources

Name the system that cuts your show and whether it publishes tally over NDI. That is what the planned path would read.

04

Watch this page for the outcome

When the path is built and proven in a working room, this page changes its status and says what it does.

Questions

Does the software read NDI tally today?

No. NDI tally is planned and it does not run today. Until it is built, your production team decides when a camera moves, and the software moves it when asked.

Why does tally matter for prepared camerawork?

Tally is the one bit of data that says which camera the room is watching. With it, the software can hold a live camera still and prepare the others, so automation never moves the picture on air.

Would the software add NDI streams to our network?

No. The plan is to read tally status where NDI already publishes it. The software sends no video of its own, and it never joins the video path.

Can we have tally awareness today some other way?

Yes, with a Blackmagic ATEM. That path runs today: a camera on program holds still, and a cue for it waits for the cut. vMix, OBS, TriCaster, Ross and NDI tally are planned.
