Ride the authored move like a dolly grip.
When the moment needs a human hand, take the timing and keep the shot you composed.
A flight is an authored camera move, with a planned route, framing and pace from departure through landing. Some moments do not keep to a plan. A baptism runs long, a speaker walks into the aisle, an encore arrives that nobody scheduled. Jog is the hand on the move: take a stick or a wheel and ride the prepared flight forward or backward, quick or slow, for as long as the moment lasts.
The camera stays on the route you composed the whole time. A stick cannot steer the shot off that route, so the person riding it supplies timing and nothing else. Every frame on the way is a frame somebody already approved, in daylight, at a desk.
That is what makes it safe to hand to a volunteer. There is no framing to find under pressure, no way to end up somewhere nobody would cut to, and no need for the one person who can drive a joystick smoothly to be in the building. Let go, and the shot is where the production expects it.
The same hand works on every prepared move, so a team learns one habit and applies it everywhere. The judgement stays in the composed move; the timing stays with the person watching the room.
Jog works from the controller your team already has. A VISCA joystick panel on the desk, or a USB joystick or gamepad plugged into the computer, can ride the move, and both run today. The same stick axis does the same job on every flight.
Use a cue when the moment keeps to plan and jog when it does not. Either way the camera stays on a route somebody composed, so the choice is about timing and never about where the shot goes.
Questions
Can someone steer the camera off the composed route with jog?
No. Jog moves the camera forward or backward along the route you composed, quick or slow. It supplies timing and nothing else, so the frame never ends up somewhere nobody would cut to.
What happens when the person riding the move lets go?
The shot stays on the route, at a frame somebody already approved. Letting go never sends the camera somewhere nobody composed, which is why the stick is safe to hand to a volunteer.
Is jog the same as manual PTZ control?
No. Manual control moves pan, tilt and zoom freely, and the operator finds the framing live. Jog rides a move that was composed in advance, so the operator decides when the shot arrives and the framing was decided at a desk.
Which controllers can ride the move?
A VISCA joystick panel pointed at the computer running the software, or a USB joystick or gamepad plugged into it. Both run today. Bitfocus Companion and Stream Deck are in evaluation and are not part of jog yet.

Flights and the virtual rail
A flight is an authored camera move, with a planned route, framing and pace from departure through landing.
Safety
Soft limits, a stop command that holds, and a controlled stop when the software lets go.
USB joysticks and gamepads
A USB stick or gamepad drives the console, mapped the way the hand holding it wants it.
VISCA joystick panels
Keep the panel on your desk. A preset key becomes a cue; a stick axis becomes a virtual rail.
Houses of worship
Prepare the camerawork before Sunday. Perform it with the moment.
Music venues and concert halls
